FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED THERAPY?

Everyone can get something from therapy! People come for a variety of reasons - sometimes they feel stuck or overwhelmed, and other times they just want to talk through things or understand themselves better. Even if you aren't sure about coming in, you can reach out and ask if therapy is something that would help in your situation. Worst case scenario you have a helpful connection for the future - best case you can start creating the future you want for yourself!

In the end, if you are looking to change something in your life or to better understand your own mental health, therapy sounds like a good fit for you.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELING, THERAPY, AND PSYCHOTHERAPY?

These words can mean different things in other contexts, the terms counseling, therapy, and psychotherapy are mostly referring to the same thing when it comes to mental health. It is a time set aside to talk with a licensed mental health professional to help you work towards your goals.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST AND OTHER MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS?

The name is a bit confusing - Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT's) can work with couples, families and individuals in therapy. While most mental health professionals have similar mental health training, marriage and family therapists place an extra emphasis on how each person is connected to a greater whole (like their relationships, family, and even society). This focus gives MFT's additional preparation for working with couples and families, but also provides us with an extra perspective to use when working with individuals. No man is an island - and we want to respect that as we work together.

HOW LONG ARE THERAPY SESSIONS, AND HOW OFTEN WOULD WE MEET?

Typically individual and family therapy sessions begin on the hour and last 50-60 minutes, and couples therapy is typically 80-90 minutes. That being said, timing can be flexible depending on what is most helpful for you; some people like longer sessions!

As for how often we will meet, the standard is once a week, but that can be changed to fit what is best for you and your schedule. I usually start with weekly sessions while we are getting to know each other (the first 2-3 sessions), then as we start meeting your goals we can space sessions out as needed.

WHAT'S WITH THE PENGUINS?

How'd you notice? I'm a huge fan of penguins. Part of it is because they're adorable, but I also keep them around because they have played a huge role in my own growth. You know how in most documentaries with penguins, there are crowds of them shuffling around on the edge of the water? They're afraid because there are predators in the water, but at the same time the water is where they get their food and thrive - some can even outrace dolphins!

I could relate to that in my own struggles with anxiety. It kept me on the edge of the water, stopping me from diving in and doing what I felt like I was made for. So I followed the lead of my freezing feathered friends and learned to dive in -  accepting the anxiety when it comes, but making sure it doesn't stop me from living the life I want to live.

HOW MUCH DO SESSIONS COST?

My rate for therapy sessions is $110/hour. I do save some spots for sliding scale or reduced rate as needed, but cannot always guarantee that a spot is open.

As for insurance, I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Uprise Health, and Spring Health. Even if I am not in network with your insurance provider, I am happy to provide whatever you need for reimbursement!
